The Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Hong Kong

Honorary Secretary's Report for the Year 1997-1999

Relation between HKCOG and OGSHK :

In the last BGM in May 1997, there was suggestion to transfer the FIGO and AOFOG membership from OGSHK to HKCOG, so that HKCOG can represent Hong Kong internationally. After thorough discussion between the parties, it was considered not advisable to transfer such memberships at the present moment. The two societies will maintain their distinctive role and works towards their members.

Scientific Meetings:

Organisation of scientific meetings is a major task of the Honorary Secretary and the Council. Scientific meetings serve many purpose, scientific exchange, social and postgraduate education (CME). In these two years, meetings were usually held every one to two months. In November 1998, there were five meetings and I must admit it may be too heavy for members. But sometimes it is inevitable as the trip of overseas speaker has been fixed few months ago. In the first quarter of 1999, there is not much scientific meeting because of lack of commercial sponsorship. The attendance of these meeting, both from regular and associate members, was good.

Public Lectures

During these two years, we have jointly organise lectures for public with the following organisations: Mead Johnson Nutritional, Johnson and Johnson and Wyeth HK Ltd. The topics included antenatal, postnatal care, menopause and common gynaecological diseases. Members were invited to be guest speakers and the public response was very good. I must thank all the speakers on behalf of the Society.

A public health information hotline was launched in early 1999 and public can get free information on women's health over the phone. We will reassess the progress of the hotline in few months time. The hotline was sponsored by Wyeth HK Ltd.

Our Society was involved in the drafting of the guideline on the prevention and management of osteoporosis in Hong Kong. The guideline was finally published in the Hong Kong Medical Journal.

Bidding for 2006 FIGO Congress in Hong Kong

An open forum was held together with HKCOG on 17 July 1998 to solicit members' opinion and support for the bidding process. The final bidding document was sent to FIGO in February 1999.
