Abstract

Morphological changes in the osteoporotic spine of elderly Chinese women

Osteoporosis is creating a lot of health problems all over the world since bone pain and fractures are common complications. Of the common fractures encountered, the vertebral entity gives the most chronic and disabling effects. Detailed studies on the morphological changes of the osteoporotic vertebral column are deficient. This study aimed to clinically and radiologically investigate the morphological changes of vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs in a group of Chinese women (n = 100) known to be suffering from severe osteoporotic spinal fractures. The vertebral changes examined included various fractures similar to those in western reports on whites, like vertebral body wedging, compression, and fish tail deformities; we also failed to observe features that are often seen in whites, like clustering of fractures. The intervertebral discs between the deformed vertebral bodies were found to be expansile radiologically. (Hong Kong Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery 2002;6(1):27-33)

骨質疏鬆症引起之脊椎形態改變

骨質疏鬆及其併發症如疼痛及骨折,正為全球帶來不少健康難題。常見的骨折中,脊椎骨折造成最嚴重的長期及殘障影響。目前有關骨質疏鬆脊椎形態學轉變的詳細研究並不多。本文研究了100例已知有嚴重骨質疏鬚脊椎骨折的女性。結果顯示,脊椎體個別骨折型態與西方報導相似,但骨折椎體的位置較外國報導分散, 甚少聚合一起。缺少聚合直接減少佝僂型態的產生。因此,曾有骨質疏鬆脊椎骨折的香港年長女性,除疼痛外, 少見佝僂,多見身體高度下降。同一研究中,又多見椎間盤膨脹現象,需要進一步的鑽研。
