Abstract

Avulsion fracture of the tibial tubercle and proximal tibial physis

Avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity is an uncommon injury. We report on three cases of avulsion fracture of the tibial tubercle and proximal tibial epiphysis (type IV fracture) that occurred in teenage boys as sports injuries. Closed reduction and immobilisation achieved realignment of the knee in all three cases, as well as a return to full weight-bearing exercise without any complications. It seems that avulsion fracture of the tibial tubercle can be adequately treated with closed reduction and immobilisation alone. (Hong Kong j. orthop. surg. 2001;5(1):70-73)
