Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a minimally invasive technique for accurate axillary nodal staging in early breast cancer. It has minimal morbidity compared to complete axillary dissection. Continued technical refinement will improve the accuracy of the procedure. The success rate of SLNB is improved by combining vital blue dye and isotope mapping. The advantages of combined mapping technique and the related technical details are discussed using data from overseas series and the authors' local experience. (J HK Coll Radiol 2001;1:37-40)
