The potential role of high-dose chemotherapy in treating breast cancer patients with high risk of distant failure has been discussed. The weight of the present evidence is against the routine use of high-dose chemotherapy in the primary treatment for breast cancer. However, we still have to wait for the mature data form two large randomised trails (CALGB trial and Scandinavian trial) to be certain of the lack of survival benefit of this innovative approach.
