Abstract
Objectives: To study the necessity of pre-operative visits and factors influencing the demand for visits by surgical patients. Methods: Before their elective operations, surgical patients were surveyed on their demands for details of operations, anaesthetic methods and modes of visitation. Results: The demand for pre-operative visits of surgical patients was very strong while female subjects had a much higher demand than males. The gender and educational level of the subjects had no influence on the content of the visits. There was no difference in the demand for details of operations between subjects with high secondary education or above and those without. Most subjects preferred visits of less than 30 minutes one day before their operations. An interview supplemented with written information is welcome by most patient. Conclusion: A pre-operative visit was necessary for most surgical patients. To meet their needs, nurses should carefully plan the visits and select a suitable approach for individual patients.
