Disseminating information is an important strategy in the development of nursing knowledge as well as helping to bridge the theory-practice gap.
In line with this thought, the College of Nursing, Hong Kong, launched the writing competition exercise in 2001. One of the major agendas was to encourage dissemination of nursing knowledge - reflection on practice and lessons learned from application of theory, through writing. In this issue, we have the pleasure to publish two of those papers, which won the writing competition awards. It is encouraging to see that both nursing students and staff nurses are contributing to the development of nursing knowledge by sharing their views and clinical experience through writing. One may regard writing to disseminate information as a small step; however, these small steps adding together will gather momentum to move nursing forwards. The Journal is very proud to provide a forum for such endeavours.
One of the papers in this issue is a case study entitled "Critical care of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting". Although readers may find the case study focuses mainly on the physical aspect of critical care, the authors acknowledge this and caution readers on the need to provide holistic nursing. Indeed, psychosocial aspects of nursing should be integrated into every steps of nursing interventions.
