Development of a Performance Management Model for Nurse Managers

Joan BABER and David F. BROWN

Abstract

The aim of the study was to develop a performance model appropriate for nurse managers, which builds on previous research, and identifies unique dimensions of management roles necessary for effective unit performance in Australia. The research design involved standardised interviews with a group of specialists in the nursing area. The standardised questions presented in the interview were identified from current research literature and government reports detailing new roles and responsibilities for nurses in management roles. Data were collected via a one hour structured interview with Queensland health management (content) experts from the Queensland Health Department, major hospitals, university schools of nursing and management, and professional bodies. Thirty content experts were interviewed, and data collected on their perceptions of the roles and responsibilities of nurse managers. An analysis of interview data identified dimensions defining management roles in priority areas of finance and budgeting, informatics and data management, strategic and human resource management, and strategic and conceptual analysis.
